We would like to express our deepest sympathy to the family of William Herbert York "LUM" Born November 16, 1918 Died August 15, 2004
Born in Elmore, AL., Lum will be remembered for his career as an entertainer, musician and comedian. From 1944 to 1949, he was the bass player/comedian with Hank Williams. He performed at numerous venues as a member of Hank's Drifting Cowboy band, including the Louisiana Hayride and Grand Ole Opry. He went on to perform with other popular musicians including Lefty Frizzell, George Morgan and Marty Robbins. In 1949 he moved to Baton Rouge, La. where he continued to play music and married Juanita Kelley in 1954. Lum's association with the Museum in Montgomery led to many trips to Alabama and other locations at festivals honoring Hank Williams.
Lum continued to be a crowd favorite by sharing the stage with the musicians and local bands by playing his latest trademark…the "Spoons".
Lum York was the only person to ever play with all three "Hanks"... Hank, Sr., Hank, Jr., Hank,III and Jett Williams. It took him "two centuries" to accomplish that, and Lum was very proud of that recognition.
P.S. Don't forget your favorite photo with Lum.
This Birthday Celebration is in Memory of Lum. At the request of the family, memorial donations may be made to the Hank Williams Museum, 118 Commerce Street, Montgomery, AL 36104.
Lum will be remembered by family, friends and fans across the country for his love of music and laughter.
